Laureth-22 is a non-ionic surfactant, which, based on its properties, is one of the components used in the production of cosmetics and personal care products. In cosmetic formulations, it acts, among others, as an emulsifier, solubilizer or modifier of rheologic properties.

Characteristics

Laureth-22 is a non-ionic surfactant. The compound belongs to the group of ethoxylated alcohols. Laureth-22 is a name that functions in the international INCI nomenclature system. Its alternative chemical names are also used, such as polyoxyethylene lauryl alcohol or polyethylene glycol dodecyl ether. Laureth-22 CAS no. is 68439-50-9.

Physical and chemical properties of Laureth-22:

  • a clear liquid (at 75ᵒC),
  • colour in the Hazen scale: maximum 150 (at 75ᵒC),
  • characteristic odour,
  • very good solubility in water (especially in warm water),
  • molar mass: approx. 1165 g/mol,
  • density at 65ᵒC: 1.03 g/mol,
  • solidification point: about 37ᵒC,
  • hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB): 16.6
  • pH of a 1% aqueous solution: 6.0 to 8.0.

Effects of Laureth-22 in industrial products

The cosmetic industry shows the greatest demand for Laureth-22. In numerous cosmetic formulations, such as hair, skin and body care products, it acts as an emulsifier and solubilizer. Being one of the ingredients, it significantly affects the efficiency of combining the water and oil phases — creating an emulsion — and is responsible for its durability, which directly determines the application properties and effectiveness of the cosmetic. Due to the highly hydrophilic nature of Laureth-22 (caused by its high degree of ethoxylation), it is particularly suitable for the formation of O/W (oil-in-water) emulsions. In order to obtain particularly stable emulsions, it is recommended to use Laureth-22 in combination with other surfactants being good emulsifiers and having a low hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance. In lotions, creams or make-up removers, Laureth-22 creates a protective layer on the skin surface — the so-called occlusive layer. It has a protective effect, prevents excessive loss of moisture from the skin surface (moisturising effect) and protects against harmful external factors. Products containing Laureth-22 have the ability to nourish, soften and smooth the skin and hair. Laureth-22 is also used as a dispersant and an agent influencing the rheologic properties of cosmetic formulations.

Laureth-22 is an effective emulsifier in a number of applications in the cosmetics industry. Its unquestionable advantage is that it can be used in an oxidizing and reducing environment, as well as in hard water. It is active in cold water, in an acidic and neutral environment, and in diluted alkalis. Moreover, Laureth-22 as a commercial product (e.g. in the portfolio of the PCC Group — ROKAnol L22) is obtained based on renewable, plant-based raw materials.
