Ecological construction

In recent years increasing attention has been devoted to ecology. Industry has been introducing new technologies that enable the production of materials that are more environmentally friendly or are biodegradable. Such materials are also used in the building industry. It is highly important due to the fact that new buildings replace green areas in our constantly developing cities. Materials used in construction have a significant impact on our ecosystem, although it is not always obvious. So, how can we construct a tall office building which will remain sustainable?

Sustainable building

Ecological construction, also referred to as sustainable building or green building, is a term referring to the method of designing and constructing buildings in the most sustainable manner possible and with care for the environment.

The whole process starts with the design, because even at this stage it is important to take into account sustainable solutions that will be implemented during construction. One of the assumptions is that such a building should fit into its surroundings as much as possible. The more natural it looks in the given location, the better. For instance, a large building on the outskirts would not fit well into a landscape of single-family houses, forests or parks. One of the popular methods of fitting a building better into the surroundings is the creation of so-called “green roofs”. This idea consists in planting grass and sometimes small shrubs on the surface of the roof.  This solution not only creates a beautiful visual effect, but it is also a good solution to create space in which employees or residents of the building can spend their free time.

Selection of materials and product mark

The design stage involves the selection of materials and the technologies to be used for the new structure. It is important that they have the lowest possible impact on the environment, both at the production stage (e.g. use of recycled materials, reduction of waste) and during their use. The durability of the structure and materials is also highly important. A building that does not need extensive repairs for a long time will be far more sustainable than one requiring considerable financial and material expenses within a few years. Thus good design and materials not only lead to financial savings, but they also have a positive effect on the environment due to the reduced amount of construction waste.

To understand the basis for sustainable building and the importance of the materials used, we need to focus on high quality. The PCC Group portfolio includes a special group of products under the “Sustainable building” mark. These include raw materials and chemical additives that have been designed and manufactured in a manner that is least invasive for the environment. These are products which can be used to produce environmentally-friendly building materials and to limit energy consumption throughout the construction life cycle.

PCC Group offer

The group of products created for sustainable building includes the Crossin® line. These are ready-made products for the production of spray polyurethane foams, used as thermal insulation, for example.

A line of polyurethane systems, Ekoprodur, is also available and used to create thermal insulation systems in buildings, but also sees use in the production of water heaters or boilers, and often used in our homes.

We also encourage you to discover our microsilica range, which is produced in one of the most environment and climate friendly plants in the world, PCC BakkiSilicon hf. in Iceland. Silica dust is perfectly suitable for the production of mortars and castings, ceramic products and for many other applications for the building industry.
