C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate
Ester of benzoic acid and C12-15 alkyl compounds

Products with INCI C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate names in the offer of PCC Group

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is an ester of benzoic acid and alcohols with a carbon chain length from C12 to C15, which plays a key role in the cosmetics industry. As an emollient, it is used in products such as shower gels, hand creams, shampoos, hair removal products and make-up removers.

General characteristics of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate

The INCI name for benzoic acid ester and alkyl compounds (C12-C15) is C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate. A Polish name for this compound is ‘C12-15 benzoesan alkilu’. It can be identified by its CAS number: 68411-27-8.

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate has a light consistency. It easily penetrates the epidermis, significantly supporting its microflora. Importantly, it is gentler on the skin than SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulphate) and SLES (Sodium Laureth Sulphate), which are popular cleansing agents. It does not contain allergens, making it safe for people with sensitive and irritation-prone skin. In addition, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate added to antiperspirant preparations, for example, prevents skin whitening or the formation of local discolouration.

Properties of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate:

  • Oily, clear liquid
  • Characteristic odour
  • Colour on the Hazen scale: max. 50
  • Low viscosity
  • Insoluble in water
  • Very soluble in fats, chloroform, hexane

Application of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate

Benzoic acid ester and alkyl compounds (C12-C15) are important ingredients used mainly in the cosmetics industry for the production of cosmetic formulations and personal hygiene products. Products containing C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate include face washing gels, body lotions, hand and foot creams, facial scrubs and shower gels.

Key features and applications of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate:

Antimicrobial agent

Added to cosmetic products, it prevents the survival of microorganisms and inhibits their further growth. This prevents changes in the consistency and appearance of preparations. Cosmetics with the addition of C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate have a longer shelf life.

UV protection

UV filters protect the skin from solar radiation. UV-A and UV-B rays are particularly dangerous to humans. Sun protection has a protective effect on the epidermis, preventing sunburn, ageing and skin cancer. C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is a very good solvent for lipophilic active ingredients and UV filters.

Active substance carrier

The penetration of active substances from a cosmetic formulation to the skin surface is determined by a number of factors. To facilitate their penetration and enhance their effect, active substance carriers are used. C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate performs this function in cosmetics. It facilitates the penetration of individual ingredients, thereby improving their bioavailability.

Emollient

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate spreads over the skin and forms an occlusive layer. It prevents excessive water evaporation, indirectly producing a moisturising effect. This gives the skin a healthy appearance, softness and smoothness. Emollients in cosmetics also have a protective function against harmful environmental factors.

Viscosity modification

Reducing the viscosity of a cosmetic product, i.e. changing its consistency to a thinner one, has a positive effect on consumer perception. The use of compounds such as C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate changes the consistency of the cosmetic, which translates into functionality and comfort of use. Viscosity, as a characteristic of cosmetic products, is also important for other reasons – it affects the stability of the cosmetic, compliance with regulations, etc.

Dispersant

Most cosmetics are dispersion systems consisting of immiscible phases – water and oil phases. The addition of a dispersant, such as C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, causes larger particles to break down and the ingredients of the cosmetic formulation to be evenly dispersed. Improving homogeneity and consistency directly affects the stability of suspensions and the effectiveness of active ingredients. Dispersants such as C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate are also used to evenly distribute pigments in cosmetic products.
