Properties, Applications, and Differences Between Polyurea and Polyurea-Polyurethane Systems
Polyurea coatings and hybrid polyurea-polyurethane systems are among the advanced protective materials used in construction, industry, and infrastructure. They are distinguished by high mechanical resistance, flexibility, rapid curing, and durability under demanding operating conditions.
Thanks to these properties, they offer a modern alternative to many traditional protective coatings, particularly where impermeability, chemical resistance, and the ability to quickly return the surface to service are critical.
Polyurea is formed as a result of the reaction between isocyanate and an amine resin. The reaction proceeds very rapidly and most often requires application via high-pressure spraying in a two-component system.
In hybrid systems, part of the amine component is replaced by polyols. The material combines the characteristics of polyurea and polyurethane, offering good performance at a lower cost and with greater application tolerance.
Pure polyureas are recommended for applications with the highest mechanical and chemical requirements. Hybrid systems are well-suited for standard protective applications where good performance, lower cost, and greater application tolerance are important.
The choice of technology should depend on operating conditions, mechanical and chemical loads, temperature, humidity, budget, and the required completion time. In the most demanding environments, pure polyurea systems are recommended, while in standard applications, hybrid systems can be a cost-effective and sufficient alternative.
