PEG-15 Cocoamine is an example of a surfactant that acts as a emulsifier for O/W (oil-in-water) emulsions. Due to its properties, it is perfect for industrial and institutional cleaning applications, textile processes and automotive chemicals.

Characteristics

The compound with an INCI name of PEG-15 Cocoamine is an alkyl amine (containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms per molecule) that is ethoxylated with 15 molecules of ethylene oxide. Due to the presence of a double ethoxylated chain at the nitrogen atom, PEG-15 Cocoamine exhibits the activity of both a non-ionic and a cationic surfactant in an application (especially in acidic systems). The CAS number of the compound is 61791-14-8.

Physical and chemical properties of PEG-15 Cocoamine:

  • clear liquid (at the room temperature),
  • light brown to dark brown colour,
  • characteristic odour,
  • molar mass: approx. 850 g/mol,
  • good solubility in water, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate,
  • density: approx. 1.02 g/ml (at the temperature of 30ᵒC),
  • boiling point: above 200ᵒC (the substance also decomposes above the temperature),
  • solidification point: -8ᵒC,
  • good resistance to hard water.

Effects of PEG-15 Cocoamine in industrial products

PEG-15 Cocoamine is mainly used in industrial products. It works very well in both acidic and alkaline formulations. It is also resistant to hard water.  As a surfactant, it primarily acts as an emulsifiers in products. As they take a specific position at the phase boundary, molecules of PEG-15 Cocoamine effectively lower the surface tension between the phases and allow for the formation of an emulsion, i.e. a system of two mutually immiscible phases.

In the textile industry processes, PEG-15 Cocoamine is used not only as an emulsifier but also as a levelling agent e.g. in the fibre dyeing process. In microemulsion systems, it is a co-emulsifier.

The molecular structure of PEG-15 Cocoamine determines its cationic character. Thus it can form a single layer (film) on the metal surface, which gives it anti-corrosion properties and effectively protects against degradation.

PEG-15 Cocoamine is an ingredient used in car cosmetics. It exhibits very good detergency properties and thus effectively removes solid impurities. The features are also used by the industrial cleaning branch. In particular, PEG-15 Cocoamine is used in cleaners designed for hard surfaces (industrial and institutional cleaning). Other products that contain the surfactant include industrial degreasers and cleaners for metal elements.
