PEG-36 Castor Oil is an example of surface-active compounds called surfactants. It exhibits very good emulsifying, solubilising and stabilising properties. It is readily used as an ingredient in ointments, tablets, capsules and other products in the pharmaceutical industry. It meets strict quality requirements specified in the most recent edition of the European Pharmacopoeia.

General characteristics

PEG-36 Castor Oil is a non-ionic surfactant with CAS number 61791-12-6. It is an ethoxylated derivative of castor oil. Its alternative chemical names are macrogolglycerol ricinoleate and ethylene glycol polymer. PEG-36 Castor Oil is the name used in the international nomenclature system for cosmetic ingredients, INCI. The commercial product offered by the PCC Group contains more than 99% of the active substance in the form of a clear liquid or paste.

Applications

PEG-36 Castor Oil is primarily used in pharmaceutical products. It mainly acts as an emulsifier. It contributes to the formation of an emulsion and stabilises it. Based on its chemical structure (with a hydrophilic part and a hydrophobic part – which is characteristic for surfactants), it has the ability to reduce the surface tension between two immiscible phases, the water phase and the oil phase, and allow them to effectively combine. Its emulsifying properties are also used to properly disperse the active substance, which improves its bioavailability and thus guarantees improved stability of the entire formulation. This improves the solubility of other functional ingredients that are water-insoluble, such as vitamins A, D, E and K. PEG-36 Castor Oil also exhibits foaming properties. Mixed with anionic surfactants, it improves foam stability. This surfactant has a positive impact on the rheological properties of a cosmetic formulation. The appropriate viscosity of a product not only improves its functional properties and consistency, but also affects its quality. Another function of PEG-36 Castor Oil is solubilisation, i.e. allowing insoluble and hardly soluble substances and compounds that affect the quality of the product, such as fragrances, plant extracts or fatty substances, to be introduced into the formulation. In pharmaceutical products, it is used in combination with active substances such as Miconazole, Hexetidine, Clotrimazole, for example. It is included in oral or parenteral preparations and in emulsions applied directly to the skin, among others.
