Coatings are layers of material applied to the surface of another material to perform a specific function.

Coatings are applied to improve mechanical properties of the material, to provide protections or for decorative purposes. Coatings may be natural or synthetic, single or multi-layered, and each layer may be formed by one or more ingredients. This diversity allows users to obtain desirable properties of materials regardless of their original features. The applied coating may change adhesion, wettability or corrosion resistance of the modified material.

Paints and varnishes are examples of coatings – they may be classified as decorative and protective coatings.
