Wood adhesives – what are they, what are they made of and what are they used for?

Adhesives are a group of substances that allow different materials and surfaces to be joined together, preventing them from separating. They belong to a group of materials that modify the bonded surface, whose most important feature is to increase adhesion.

Substances used for bonding wood elements are based on various chemical raw materials, mainly a wide range of polyurethanes. Some of them offer waterproof properties and are intended for outdoor use. Others, on the other hand, are intended exclusively for indoor use (e.g. in the furniture industry). Their main purpose is to ensure strong, durable and aesthetic bonds between wooden elements (or those made from wood).

Types of wood adhesives

While in the case of the PCC brand we mainly supply adhesives based on polyether polyols, diols, prepolymers and silicone hybrid polymers, it is also worth mentioning other basic categories (taking into account the division by chemical composition and intended use). These are:

• PVA adhesives – popular in amateur and professional carpentry.
• Polyurethane adhesives – water and temperature resistant, ideal for outdoor applications.
• Formaldehyde adhesives – mainly used in industry.
• Epoxy adhesives – two-component, with exceptional adhesion and chemical resistance
• Hot melt adhesives – fast-setting.

Industrial wood adhesives for specific industries. Who uses them?

The professional adhesives produced in our plants are used in three main areas. Our offer includes:

• Adhesives for furniture making – as the name suggests, they are used in furniture production. They are used for assembling structural elements, edge banding, surface laminating and finishing details. Therefore, they must guarantee the durability of joints and the aesthetic appearance of the finished product. They are used by carpentry workshops, smaller manufacturers and woodworking companies.
• Parquet adhesives – dedicated to service companies laying floors and wooden parquet manufacturers themselves. They allow for permanent fixing of boards to the substrate. The expected parameters are: flexibility, moisture resistance, protection against loads.
• Adhesives for LDF boards – used mainly in industry, including in the production of furniture, wall panels, packaging and decorative elements. They must ensure stability and appropriate strength parameters.

The recipients of such finished products are primarily furniture factories, carpentry companies, manufacturers of parquet and wooden floors, wood-based panel factories and companies involved in wood processing and manufacturing.
