EXOemul AG-6 is a mixture of anionic and non-ionic surfactants intended primarily for use as an emulsifier in agrochemical formulations. The product contains the calcium salt of dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid (CaDDBS) in isobutanol, together with carefully selected non-ionic surfactants. The composition of the ingredients ensures an HLB value of approximately 12.6, making EXOemul AG-6 the more hydrophilic component of the emulsifying system.
EXOemul AG-6 is primarily intended for use in EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate) agrochemical formulations. When the concentrate is diluted with water, it promotes the formation of a stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion, ensuring the uniform dispersion of the organic phase containing the active substance within the aqueous phase.
At room temperature, the product is a cloudy, yellow liquid with a dry matter content of between 89 and 99 per cent. The density of EXOemul AG-6 is approximately 1.090 g/cm³, and its viscosity is approximately 1,700 cP. The product is characterised by a low water content, below 1 per cent, and a pH ranging from 5 to 8. It solidifies at a temperature of approximately 7°C. Furthermore, this product is highly soluble in water and methanol, whilst it is insoluble in ethyl ether and slightly soluble in acetone.
EXOemul AG-6 can be used on its own or in combination with EXOemul AG-4, which has a lower HLB value of approximately 9.6. Combining the two products allows the hydrophilic–lipophilic balance of the emulsifying system to be adjusted by varying their relative proportions. This allows the HLB of the system to be adapted to the nature of the organic phase, the solvent used and the properties of the active ingredient. This approach provides considerable flexibility when designing formulations and enables the emulsifying system to be optimised for the rapid formation of a milky emulsion following dilution of the concentrate with water, whilst maintaining its stability over time.
The simultaneous presence of anionic and non-ionic components promotes the stabilisation of the resulting dispersed phase droplets. The electrostatic interactions associated with the presence of the anionic surfactant, complemented by the stabilisation provided by the non-ionic components, limit droplet aggregation and the phenomenon of coalescence. As a result, EXOemul AG-6 helps to maintain the homogeneity and stability of the milk emulsion after the formulation has been diluted with water.
