Desiccants have hygroscopic properties. They are used to remove moisture from various surfaces, environments or materials. Their purpose is to prevent the formation of mould, rust and other harmful effects of water on products.

The rate at which moisture is absorbed depends on the diffusion of water through the material to be dried and into the reaction centres within the desiccant.

In the construction and renovation industry, desiccants accelerate the drying process of materials (e.g. cement) and minimise the risk of condensation, mould or damage. The food industry in turn uses desiccants to preserve food, which is integral to maintaining the safety of consumption. The reduction of moisture is also a desirable effect in other areas, e.g. electronics or the automotive industry.
