Sulfuric acid is an inorganic chemical compound from the group of sulfur oxoacids and it is one of the strongest acids. All acids with an acidity greater than that of 100% pure sulfuric acid are called super acids. Sulfuric acid is called the blood of the chemical industry due to the fact that it is used in many key syntheses. The salts and esters of sulfuric acid are hydrogen sulphates and sulphates.

Currently, sulfuric acid is obtained in industry mainly by contact method. The strong hygroscopicity of sulfuric acid is of key importance in the PCC Group, making it perfectly suited for the "drying" of chlorine in the production process. The diluted acid has a concentration of min. 77%.

Sulfuric acid is widely used in many branches of industry. The highest consumption of sulfuric acid is found in the fertilizer industry, e.g. production of superphosphates, ammonium phosphate or ammonium sulphate. The product takes an active part in the production of other acids – hydrochloric acid is produced in the Mannheim process from rock salt and sulfuric acid. It is also used in the production of nitric and phosphoric acid.

In the explosives industry, along with nitric acid, it is used in the nitration of toluene, which ultimately leads to the formation of TNT. In the petrochemical industry, sulfuric acid is used to dry oils, kerosene, paraffin. In petroleum refining it is a catalyst in the reaction of obtaining isooctane, a compound that increases the octane number of gasoline. In mining and metallurgy, it is applied in the processes of copper ore enrichment or pickling of rolled steel sheets.

Sulfuric acid is used in the production of detergents, such as sodium salts of sulfuric esters with higher alcohols (e.g. sodium lauryl sulfate). This compound is also used as an electrolyte in automotive batteries. It is used in the production of drugs, as a reagent in laboratories, as well as in organic synthesis for sulphonation and during the nitration reaction.

In the cosmetics industry, sulfuric acid is used for the production of raw materials and semi-finished products (lapis, silver nitrate), hydrogen peroxide, fragrances and organic dyes. Due to its chemical properties, it is also used in the production of acid dyes (sodium or calcium salts of nitroso, azo and nitro dyes), used in the production of wood paints and varnishes.
