Sodium hypochlorite is a slightly yellow, straw-coloured substance. It has a sharp chlorine odour and strong corrosive properties. The product is delivered to the market only in a liquid form. It has bactericidal and antiseptic properties. It also has oxidizing and corrosive properties. In industry, the product is used, among others, for bleaching wood pulp and textiles, cleaning and disinfecting drinking water before it enters the distribution of the municipal water supply network, disinfecting water in swimming pools and ponds, cleaning domestic and industrial waste, removing organic and inorganic impurities. Sodium hypochlorite is also widely used for disinfecting systems, pipelines and tanks in the dairy industry, in the production of wine and brewing beer. It is used in medicine for external and local use, as an antiviral, antifungal and bactericidal agent in the treatment of skin, mucous membranes and wounds. It can be used to sterilize some medical devices, and in dentistry as an antiseptic.

In industrial organic synthesis, sodium hypochlorite is used for the production of various compounds (hydrazine, anthranilic acid, chloropicrin) and for degassing in the process of hydrometallurgical production of toxic liquid and gaseous waste. In turn, in analytics it is used as a reagent for photometric studies. Hypochlorite is also used for the production of modified food starch in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
