MSP v.1 (Styrenated phenol) is a substance made up of a mixture of products of phenol and styrene reaction: primarily monostyrenated, distyrenated and tristyrenated phenol. The product is difficult to disolve in water, but it dissolves well in the majority of organic solvents. MSP v.1 is a colourless liquid, but it may also assume a bright yellow, pale straw colour. The dynamic viscosity of the product at the temperature of 250C ranges between 300–500 mPa.s, while its viscosity in the same temperature conditions is about 1.08 g/cm3. The boiling temperature for MSP v.1 is 2400C, and its flash point is above 1000C.
MSP v.1 (Styrenated phenol) is a product of the reaction between phenol and styrene, occurring in the presence of a catalyst, i.e. acidic ion exchange resin. Subsequently, in the process of derivation and purification of MSP v.1, the post-reaction mixture is subject to distillation in a deep vacuum.
MSP v.1 (Styrenated phenol) is used, but not limited to use, as a non-staining and non-discolouring antioxidant in the production of plastics and in the rubber industry. The product is also used as a diluent for epoxy paints. It is characterised by low viscosity, high compatibility with other ingredients. Moreover, MSP v.1 is characterised by very good action accelerating the hardening of plastics and coatings.
